WASHINGTON - Seven Marines United States (U.S.) were killed and seven others injured when a mortar exploded while still in the launch tube during training in Nevada, the military said on Tuesday (19/3). Mortar exploded during exercise in military posts Hawthorne.
The Marine Corps also issued a ban on training with all the mortar kind. "Now an investigation is underway to complete," said Marine spokesman Capt. Kendra Motz, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (20/4).
Military post in Nevada is an area of 147 thousand hectares (nearly 600 kilometers) and covers more than 2,000 bunkers. Location is approximately 140 miles (225 km) southeast of Reno. The place was a desolate field that is used to train troops prepared to deploy to Afghanistan.
Maj. Gen. Raymond Fox, commander of II Marine Expeditionary Force expressed sorrow over the death of the victim, who is from 2 Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. "We mourn their loss, and with heavy hearts we remember the courage and sacrifice," he said in a statement.
U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel were briefed on the accident and expressed their condolences, officials said. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada said, "I said feeling sad for their families. Sympathy of my fellow Marines, who are also grieving over this incident."
